      Story-is-beautiful

We're a culture centered around stories. Heck...thousands of cultures before us were centered around stories! It's how history was passed down between generations in certain cultures. Nevertheless, we're obsessed with stories. That's why we watch movies and read books. That's why Hollywood and TV shows make millions upon millions of dollars creating good (and even bad) stories.

But you know what the problem is with the entertainment industry? You can never just experience one story! Even though "Act of Valor" was a great movie, it's not going to be the last movie you ever see. You know why? Because once the movie's over, the story's over. As it goes with EVERY movie and book (unless of course there are sequels, sagas, trilogies, etc.). Once you reach the end...that's it. No more story. So we continue in search of other good stories by watching more movies and reading more books. Becuase one story can't satisfy. Or can it?

I was thinking the other day how we can get obsessed with a particular story. (I'll confess, I can't get enough of The Hunger Games...read all the books in one week after seeing the movie. Amazing.) When we become obsessed with a partiular story, we do everything we can to figure out all the little details, nuances and intricacies of the story. Let's take the hit TV show "Lost" for example: They created such a great story, that Lost followers were almost a culture of their own! So many little details that people obsessed about. Yet, it didn't matter because the author never told you everything you wanted to know. (What a waste of my life watching that show...)

But what if I told you that there was a greater story? One that could keep and hold your attention for the rest of your life? Would you want to watch it? Would you want to read it? Of course you would!

The story I'm talking about...is your own.

Yes...I'm talking about YOUR life. YOUR story. YOUR purpose that God has instilled in you.

How good a story are you making with your life? Is it something peope would want to read/watch? Why or why not?

You see, we can become saddened when a movie is over because we want to be involved in the untold story. Yet, I should be as excited and involved in my story that doesn't end, as I am in someone else's story.

What do you think? What can you do TODAY to make a better story?

      Cheers,

      -Derek

      Hunger-games

The Hunger Games. Wow. What…a…movie. I have so many things stirring in me from that movie. I don't know why, but I became very involved in it. I involved myself in the plot. I imagined myself as a Father seeing my 12 year old daughter go off to fight to the death…knowing she probably won't make it. I imagined my brother being forced to fight for a worthy-less cause…all for entertainment and "punishment".

I became very sick at my stomach watching the first fight scene. The slaughter of children by children. I really thought I was going to vomit. My stomach became tight and queasy and stayed that way for the rest of the movie. But I think the thing that made me so queasy is knowing that…our society is not far off from something like that. Ya, we think we would never force children to fight to the death. Yet there are people in history that have committed genocide. There are child soldiers forced to leave there families and kill other children and families. And we…don't…care. We're just like those people from the Capitol watching the Hunger Games. We're so involved in OUR lives…so enthralled with OUR surroundings that we forget that there are millions of people suffering. Yet we can actually stop it. We can stop the suffering. We can end things like extreme poverty.

I've taken a brief hiatus from Maxwell's "Today Matters" to finish off the Hunger Games series of books. I've just finished reading through the second one. Man, what a story. Anytime a writer can capture the attention of millions of people all across the globe…they deserve props.

Now the premise of "children killing children" definitely disturbs me. I'm not going to ignore that. But the themes and moral undertones of the story are what intrigue me most. Trying to get inside the head of an author can be tricky. What is Suzanne Collins trying to communicate? What are the themes she wants her readers to see? What are the things that, whether intentionally or even unintentionally, will the reader take away from a story like this?

I have many more thoughts on The Hunger Games…and I assure you I'll follow up with more thoughts and questions.

      Stay tuned. :-)

Until then, what do you think about the Hunger Games movie/books?

      Cheers,

      -Derek

      Do-the-hustle

      Not like the dance...

Hustle, as in, "Get after it!"

I got lots to accomplish these next couple of weeks. Easter weekend is approaching fast...and when you work for a church...it's like planning for the Super Bowl.

I've got about 5-6 videos I need to shoot, edit and create. Two of those need to be done by THIS Sunday. Let's just say...I'm starting to stress out.

I'm trying to find my calm happy place. Not sure where that is yet...but when I figure it out, I'll let you know.

What do you do when you're stressed out? What helps you relax and push past the stress?

      Cheers,

      -Derek
